The Palio horse race takes place every year on the 2nd of July and 16th of August. Its enchanting scenery is the Campo square. Its origin is very old and it is still done in July to celebrate the Madonna di Provenzano , a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary in an area of the city that belonged to Provenzano Salvani, while on the 16th of August the race is run in honour of the “Madonna Assunta “ patroness of Siena. The palio is the city’s main event and it is followed with anxiety by an enormous number of spectators.
Siena is dividend into seventeen “Contrade” – districts- but only ten participate in the race. This is the climax of many months spent in expectation. The preparation starts four days before the race itself and it is marked by a unique ambiance that is the same since the Middle Ages but still very much involving even for newcomers.
